SANTA FE (Usa), March 23rd, 2020 — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham plans to announce a stay-at-home instruction this afternoon as New Mexico confronts a coronavirus outbreak that has infected at least 65 people.
She is expected to explain the details of the instruction during an address to New Mexicans about 3 p.m. The announcement will be streamed live here and on her Facebook page.
The governor and other state officials have already closed schools, banned public gatherings and limited restaurants to take-out and delivery.
Since declaring a public health emergency March 11, Lujan Grisham has aggressively urged New Mexicans to stay at home and limit personal contact as much as possible to slow the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus.
The state Department of Health says it has detected “community spread” of the disease in Bernalillo County, meaning at least some of the infections are the result of the virus moving from person to person inside New Mexico, not simply the result of exposure due to travel outside the state.
A number of states, cities and counties have ordered residents to stay home to help slow the virus outbreak. Some have closed non-essential businesses to the public. (www.abqjournal.com)
